Birmingham has the largest business, professional and financial services (BPFS) industry in the country, with more than 21,000 companies employing some 220,000 people in the region.
The industry generates £15 billion annually for the local economy.
The new Birmingham head office for HSBC UK represents part of a £200 million investment that HSBC is placing within the West Midlands, £70 million of which was spent on supplies from within 40 miles of site and signals a return to the bank’s Midlands roots.

Professional services firm PwC has moved its 2,000 Birmingham staff into a new office at One Chamberlain Square. The new locale is part of the multi-million Paradise redevelopment scheme in the city, and constitutes PwC’s largest regional office outside of London. of its ring-fenced bank, which will serve its personal and business customers, in Birmingham city centre.

Global professional services firm PwC is headed to Paradise in the summer of 2019, as the company expands its presence in Birmingham, the UK’s second city. The Big Four giant has announced it will occupy the whole first building of the multimillion Paradise redevelopment scheme in Birmingham – shortly after news emerged that the firm was planning to close six other regional presences, elsewhere in the UK.

Another property developer Unite Students has unveiled its plans to build a new £40 million complex called International House, which will reach up to 14 storeys and contain 586 bedrooms, on a vacant plot in the city's Gun Quarter.
An extension of Line 1 through Birmingham city centre is under construction and is anticipated to open to passenger services in 2021. An extension through Wolverhampton city centre is also in progress with the same opening date along with a new line from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill through Dudley Town Centre. This should open in 2023.
The Curzon Street Masterplan outlines proposals for the 141 hectare area of regeneration. It covers the area that will house the HS2 Curzon Street station in Birmingham city centre, along with £724m million in investment into the surrounding area. It envisages the creation of 36,000 new jobs. 4,000 new homes and 600,000 square metres of commercial development.
Phase One of HS2 will see a new high speed railway line constructed from Euston to north of Birmingham, where it will re-join the existing West Coast Mainline. Services will travel onwards to places like Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool, Preston and Wigan. Phase One will open between 2029 and 2033.

7. The city has unrivalled connectivity with 114 rail services to London daily, with a fastest journey time of just over 70 minutes. This will be enhanced further as Birmingham will be at the heart of the £56 billion national high speed rail (HS2) project. On completion, HS2 will make the journey time to London less than 45 minutes.
8. International connectivity is provided by Birmingham Airport with 44 airlines serving more than 140 routes worldwide, including a twice daily service to Dubai.
Research
Oxford University predicts Birmingham needs 89,000 new homes between 2011 and 2031, the equivalent of 4,450 a year. Birmingham saw 1,810 net additional homes delivered in the year to March 2015, which leaves the city with an annual shortfall of 2,640 new homes, even before the backlog is taken into account.
This shortfall could build up to at least 26,000 homes from now until HS2 is expected to start operating in 2026, by which time Oxford Economics projects that Birmingham’s 1.1 million population will have grown by 8.0%.
